Alabama born forward impressed in his 30 mins playing time.
USA new boy Aron Jóhannsson made a good start to his senior international career, coming on for half an hour in the USA’s 4-3 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina. The young striker showed promise on his debut, looking menacing in attack and making a nuisance of himself in the opposition box. The 22 year-old had two shots on goal on which he could perhaps have connected better, but there was enough there to suggest to USA fans that Klinsmann made an excellent coup in persuading the young AZ Alkmaar forward to switch.
Klinsmann said he was happy with Jóhannsson’s overall performance, and felt fans had now seen a glimpse of why he worked so hard to bring the Icelandic U21 to the USA team.
“That’s why I think everybody now understands why I tried to convince him to play for the United States and not for Iceland,” said Klinsmann. “And therefore we’re really thrilled to have him on our side and go forward with Aron.”
Jóhannson linked up well with his former AZ teammate Jozy Altidore, who scored a hat trick, their style complimenting each other well.
“Aron in his first cap was fantastic. You see what he brings to the table,” Altidore said after the US win. “I said from the first time I trained with him that this guy is a fantastic player. I heard he was American and I told him straight away that he’d be a huge asset for us and I’m happy he chose the US.
“You see from his first game just his ability to see a pass, to create space for himself. He’s a fantastic player and I’m glad that he’s here.”
